1. Salt particles

2. Coal particles

3. Soil particles (assume depends on the soil and  contamination of the soil if from industrial area)

4. Ammonium nitrate (as PM10 or PM2.5)

Air quality monitoring stations in the Newcastle LGA will be installed by the EPA in the near future. Is it important these stations include the ANSTO particle speciation testing to understand as well as the level of particles the type of particles hence source of these particles and health effects and means to control any particle pollution at their source?

I'm particularly concerned about gaseous pollution. On foggy days in the Upper Hunter there is often a sulfurous smell which burns the sinuses and stings the eyes. What are the likely gases involved and their effect on human health?

Gloucester valley has 2 open cut coal mines but fortunately no power station. AGL are threatening to build a gas fired power station.
